O'Grady's parents include Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor, and Jan O'Grady. Her family lived in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. She appeared in a few commercials prior to making the move into Los Angeles in 1986. The first role she had was modeling for Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials. She made her debut on screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was later cast in a recurring role in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest as a guest on independent films as well as television series. Donna Abandando, her first important role on the ABC cop comedy NYPD Blue was her character. The role of the tall, blonde secretary of the squad was in the series from 1993 until 1996. In each of those seasons, she was awarded an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance by the Drama Series. Along with her castmates, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Performance by an Ensemble in an Drama Series in 1995.
